We are thrilled to share the success of the 2024 COESSING School, held in Lagos, Nigeria, for the second time. This year’s event marked a significant milestone as we expanded our partnerships, hosting sessions at three prestigious institutions: the University of Lagos, Yaba College of Technology, and the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, from August 12th to 16th.
The program kicked off with an inspiring opening ceremony, followed by insightful lightning talks that set the stage for an engaging week. Participants then delved into four specialized project tracks:
Biogeochemistry
Fisheries
Physical Oceanography, Climate Modeling, and Python Computing
Science and Policy of Plastics
This year, we welcomed participants and instructors from around the globe, including representatives from the United States, Germany, Japan, Greece, South Africa, Ghana, Canada, Malaysia, and more. Their diverse perspectives and expertise enriched the experience, fostering cross-cultural collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Throughout the week, over 120 participants, 30 instructors, and 20 dedicated volunteers collaborated on small group research projects, enriched by field trips that brought their studies to life. The program culminated in a showcase where participants presented their innovative findings, demonstrating the incredible talent and dedication within our community.
The COESSING program continues to make a profound impact on future scientists worldwide, empowering the next generation of leaders in ocean science and environmental stewardship. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to making the 2024 COESSING School an unforgettable experience. Your support drives our mission forward, and we look forward to what we can achieve together in the future.

Thank you to our funders!
The 2024 school is funded by Arbic’s National Science Foundation grant OCE-1851164 as well as Arbic’s Office of Naval Research Grant #N00014-22-1-2570. We received some additional funding from University of Michigan Professor Adam Simon’s discretionary funds. Immediate funding support for the school came from Yaba Tech, and all three hosting institutions helped tremendously with in-kind and other support. We also wish to acknowledge several instructors who used some of their own individual funding to travel to the school.
